MFAs opinion of flannel and suggestions for alternative patterns?

So I've discovered the world of flannel plaid for casual button downs. I only own one at the moment, but find myself unconsciously seeking out more when I go to shop. So far I haven't found myself to be too big of a fan of simple vertical stripes for button downs (though I do own one I like).

So I was curious what MFA's opinion is on flannel, and what you all would recommend as either a step up or a different pattern that fits well with casual button downs with jeans.
