Remote Input/Outputs

I’m trying to figure out how to complete a project where I need remote clusters of inputs and outputs. I would like to do this with as few wires as possible between the Arduino controlling the project and the remote clusters. I know I can do with this a separate Arduino and use the serial library but is there a way to do this without a buying an Arduino for each cluster? Does anyone know of a simple, cheap IC that can do the job?
