alright, i came to r/knitting asking for newb help a while ago... now I have a specific problem I can't find online

So I really appreciate the tips from some of the more seasoned knitters here. I def. took to Continental knitting more than english, thanks for that tip.

But here's the thing, I have been practicing just garter stitch and no matter what every time I get to the end of a row I end up with one or two more stitches. I start with 20 stitches and by the third or 4th row i have 26-28. wtf, I am clearly doing something wrong, school me please.
