Anyone else think there was a slightly hypocritical joke in that last episode?

SpoilerDiscussion

We've had an entire series where the underlying message is rejecting stereotypes, then Falcon tells Batroc that he could probably get some french fries or a baguette if he sold his suit. Just seemed to do the opposite of what the series has so far preached.

There’s a difference between rejecting hostile racist stereotypes that are harmful to minorities, and making a joke about two foods that (albeit debatably) actually originate in a country.

I don't think French fries originated from France

Apparently Belgium. The French speaking part.

Batroc is supposed to be Algerian anyway.

That’s why I said debatably lol

So...racism is fine against non-minorities? That’s the implication of your statement. If Batroc made a joke about collard greens and fried chicken, I don’t think that same metric would hold.

I didn’t have an issue with the baguette/fries joke or anything, but the logic needs to be consistent, don’t you think?

French people... aren’t a race...

They are an ethnic group. According to Wikipedia/Oxford Dictionaries, racism includes

prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against other people because they are of a different ethnicity

Hm... I don’t believe they are. French people are mostly white. As are US Americans, Russians, etc. Sure, they have their own culture but honestly it’s more nationalism than anything. That’s it’s own can of worms considering Captain America and everything to do with Captain America is nationalist propoganda.

I don't know of it's meant to parallel but the show started with Falcon shooting and blowing up a bunch of people labelled as terrorists because they had a captive, and they never questioned why, which is exactly what Falcon spoke about in the finale.

They knew it was for money though, Baotroc even admits it. He didn't get the people to defy strong governments like Karli which was important to ask why to know why would people go against their governments unless something is wrong.

It's different, cause that was a warzone and Sam knows Batroc does this for money.

I didn't really get the joke when Sam said it, I don't really get why french fries and baugette would be a stereotypical joke about Batroc either. Can anyone who understands explain?

because he speaks french....

That’s the joke. He repeatedly points out he’s not French! Not French!

So... you’re French?

Lets just agree it was a terrible punchline cos it really was not funny.

Mmmm thing is Batroc is Algerian not French. This is what Sam is doing-he’s mocking Batroc who has repeatedly pointed out he’s not French.
