Not about the chef's knife - but transporting them. I need a roll, and bladeguard/sheath.

Recommend me

Long story short:

I take my blades to my parents, and grandparents when visiting, so I can use something that's sharp, without having to spend twenty hours sharpening the not-so-great knives they have, that they use on glass and ceramic cutting boards (oh god, why.) And frozen foods, etc.... Basically I got tired to sharpening their knives every few weeks I visit - so I bring mine (and yes, I bring my cutting boards too...)

I am looking for a decent quality roll, that can fit my largest blade, 12"x2.5", and at least 3-4 other blades of smaller dimensions. Most importantly, is that they are blade in, not handle in.

I've looked at what is offered on amazon, and the <$30 canvas, and cloth rolls seem to be of horrendous quality, and don't offer much in the way of protection from blades that are sharp. A lot of the more expensive/leather rolls are designed for handle in, instead of blade in.

So, suggest away.

I also need an individual blade guard/sheath for that 12" x 2.5" (blade) Landers, Fray, and Clark? It has a large finger guard running down from the bolster to the heel of the blade that prevents it from being placed into any hard plastic guard or sheath I've seen so far. I use Victorinox BladeSafes for my other blades when moving them individually, but I have nothing but a very big book for the 12"er.

Thanks!

I feel your pain friend! I've been searching for a solution for awhile as well.

I've come close to ordering a roll from chefknivestogo.com as I've ordered from them before and they have good customer service.

I started making sheaths for exactly this reason, couldn't find anything safe enough and the Victorinox Blade safes were not enough. Size wise or safety...

If you want one I'll make one for you but it will take a little while. Leather work has been a deeper rabbit hole than sharpening, and just as expensive at least, so be careful if you decide to DIY.

Best bet is to make a wooden saya if you have the tools, they're not too tough and you only need a hand saw and a chisel or two really.

the Tojiro canvas rolls are actually excellent, I have several, I just use sheaths inside the slots.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not going to be commissioning work from people anymore. To many negative experiences.

Making my own is not possible at the moment though.

well fair enough. I understand that.

I'm gonna make a series of 8 and 10" sheaths anyway, but I'll make sure the 12" sheaths I make will fit that size.

2.5" isn't too bad for a 12" the taller the better in my opinion.

a book is actually a great idea.

Kydex would be super easy to work if you have a cordless drill and maybe a hair dryer. Would take some patience though.

Its not so much the size, I can get 12+" and 2+" blade guards, it's the finger guard running from the bolster to the heel that's the problem.

I would say take a cheapo plastic blade guard, cut it almost the whole way to where it "folds" over the edge, and see if you can leave just a small amount such that it slide right past the guard.

Right now I'm making some sabatier sheaths, so I feel your pain, on the ones I really like I have removed a portion of that guard with files to make sharpening on whetstones possible, so that solves the problem but takes forever.
