Is ranking up in 1v1 harder than in 2s/3s?

:Discussion: DISCUSSION

So I have been playing Rocket League for ~3 months now and have no problem getting plat 2 in 2s and 3s. Yesterday I started playing 1s and I got ranked in gold 2 and I am having a MUCH harder time climbing than in the team modes. It feels like the skill differential in 1s is much much bigger than in the other modes. For example, when I play against a gold 1 player, I completely destroy them, but when I get a gold 3 opponent, I am the one being destroyed (think 10-1 scores in both cases).

I think I am not much of a mechanical player and am better at positioning and rotations, which would explain why I am having a harder time in 1s. Do mechanical players have an easier time playing 1s and harder time playing teammodes? Or is the 1v1 ladder harder to climb, i.e. is it "normal" to have a lower 1s rank than 2s or 3s?

On a sidenote: Any tips for getting better in 1s? Any nice guides you would recommend. What should I focus on at gold level of play?

1s is typically a higher scoring game than others so you tend to have more obvious wins/losses.

I think most people have lower ranks in 1s than others, i am the same rank in 2s and 1s but I still say that I am a better 1s player because it is harder.

1s and 2s play very differently, your rotations are very different between the two and so if you are a rotstional player in 2s, you will have worse rotations in 1s. Mechanics are pretty transfersble between thr game modes though and so some people may need less time to reach the same rank in 1s as 2s

Yeah It's normal to have a lower 1v1 rank than 2s/3s. I'm a Diamond 3 in 2s and a Plat 3 in 1s

Yeah, its a bit harder. It requires a different playstyle that some will adapt to easily while others, not so much. In gold you should really be focusing on fundamentals(aerials, ground shots, dribbling) I'm champ 3 in 2's, but champ 1 in 1's, so its completely normal.

they are different games entirely.

1s will have you playing totally different than 2s, and 2s will have you playing completely different than 3s.

in 1s you see almost no wall play, rotations only require 1 person. you arent building counter attacks with a teammate, no comms, no passing, no visualizing where everyone is on the field, etc. (if you can call it "rotations" at that point lol)

in 2s your rotations and your positioning only revolve around one person. you are keeping an eye on spacing with your teammate, you are trying to maintain pressure on the offense and relieve pressure on the defense.

in 3s, you have two other people your play needs to be around. you gotta move quick in rotations and you have to know where everybody is on the field. completely differnet game than 1s.

You're playing a game mode that you haven't played before. You can't reasonably expect to be the same rank as other modes. If you exclusively played 1s from the start and then started playing 3s, you'd probably be much lower in 3s.

As far as the distribution is concerned, though, while 1s used to be harder to get to higher ranks in, that's no longer the case. In fact, 1s is now statistically the easiest of the standard modes to rank up in.

its less the rank and more the brick wall i am hitting when playing higher ranked players in 1s. in team games it felt more like a progression and like games are winnable even when playing better players.

but maybe you are right and i nees to get more experience first. i am still doing a ton of stupid mistakes that are not so bad in team games because someone is there to save your ass :)

Yes, there is just a straight up MMR difference, so your rank will likely be lower even if you are placed at your skill-level's rank.

The bigger issue: 1s will actually force you how to think about this game correctly. Your poor decisions will be punished with a goal by anyone competent. The supersonic-platinum boom ball gameplay will be punished with a goal every time you get a hard touch for no reason. Your silly powerless flicks will be saved and countered into your net. Your ape-challenges will be faked or adapted to.

Most people avoid 1s because of this. It very, very quickly shows people that they are bad. If you can embrace this with a healthy mindset, it is by far the fastest way to get better at the game-sense side of Rocket League.

1s more strongly reflects your skill level, 2s and 3s are more likely to bail you out of you’re having a bad game.

I honestly think 1s is easier. I’m diamond 2 in 1s and diamond one in 2/3s. Usually I get pisspoor teammates that hurt me more than they help so I think ones is easier to rank up and see your true skill. Also makes you better at the game

Would you say that you are a rather mechanical player? Or differently: Would you say that most of the time you are the player with the best mechanics when you play 2s/3s?

Nah what he’s saying is he blames teammates for being bad when in reality he’s just as bad as his teammates.

More mechanical but chasers kill the flow of the game so I enjoy 1s more
