You get the most amazing responses. Even the most radical flare up at this infamous proposal of the anarchists

You mean just abolish gender? Yeah obviously.

I'm assuming you are looking to, in the best-case scenario, to get them to be actively against gender segregation. Or at the very least, to get them to reconsider their view that gender is fixed and has certain concrete characteristics based on the person's sex. If so, have you found any success with this approach?

I actually have quite a couple of times, funny enough all when on psychedelics. I guess people can comprehend things like gender as a broad spectrum better when they're in such a state

I still think there's a lot of people (not everyone) that would really benefit from a psychedelic experience.

So your proposal is not about getting rid of gender norms/concepts but mainly the segregation?

I am 100% on board with that. Just moved from one pretty liberal country to another but this is a noticably worse annoyance. Like why can't I meet with my (cis)male friends at the sauna anymore? Have whoever I please as a subtenant?

There are so many things getting way more complicated and require more resources because of the need to keep the boys and girls apart, no matter the age. I also believe a lot of sexist stereotypes and toxic behaviour is fostered by this seperation and othering.

Let me get my second corona vaccine and then we can see what happens.

Please tell me more about abolishing gender segregation. What does that look like in practice?

3
freescreensOP•

Just like you know how everyone divides up the genders? Just stop doing that

Other than non-gender specific public bathrooms, what do you mean? You're really not articulating this well.

In places like the US and UK gender segregated schools are still a huge thing

4
tpedesanarcho-communist•

Huge? Not really, at least in the U.S. The boys' and girls' private prep schools I knew of as a kid in a major urban area started admitting coed classes several decades ago, and most women's colleges I know, also private, at least admit men as graduate students. (They likely wouldn't be able to stay alive otherwise.) Moreover, would you claim that there is harmful gender segregation—and, for that matter, racial segregation—at Moorehouse?

I honestly think that, as stated, this is a position in search of a problem. If you want to say that normalized gender inequity has to be abolished, I'm all for that while recognizing how difficult a task that is. But "just stop doing that" is frankly such an unconsidered and simplistic answer that I don't see a lot of purpose behind it.

I see. Why do you think that gender segregation should be abolished?

3†
freescreensOP•

because it's bad. don't do gender segregation

absurdCat•

Okay, so if I'm interpreting you correctly, you're proposing getting rid of gender as a concept altogether, is that right?

I was on board with gender abolition as soon as I heard about it, one argument that's held me back is that gender is important to some trans people, and abolishing gender seems to discredit their identity and experiences.

That's a great video, thanks

One turn of phrase that works well is to simply describe gendered bathrooms as "separate but equal."
