Not a single mention on UK radio

Discussion

We all know what today is, I've been listening to UK radio stations from around 8 am and not a single mention.

How do unionists in NI justify their connection to the UK when a very significant date is completely ignored by the rest of their supposed country?

Boggles my mind.

In fairness, it was only last Friday that they decided that today was their centenary.

It's been in the planning for 2 years.

I remember posting about it on here. And everyone probably said we'd be living in a united Ireland by now.

But covid laid rest to any plans

Do you know the date Scotland was founded? Or Wales ? Or England?

Do the Welsh know their own?

Etc etc

The real problem with the centenary isnt that noone is paying attention to it, its that there are people who are! It is a non-event!

Scotland was around the 9th century there is no real set date due to what was going on, Wales was 1056 but you could also say 2011...

Those dates are weird honestly, you're conflating cultural identity, language and social structure with the formation of a political state.

Also, you can't grill the British media for not knowing enough about NI and say you can consider Wales to have been 'formed' in 2011.

MockingFaithOP•

Not really Scotland was divided and full of clan wars it's why I never gave a set date only a century.

1056 when when Wales finally removed English rule from its land and is recognised historically as to when Wales finally became it's own country as north and south united.

Internationally Wales was recognised as a country in its own right in 2011.

If the last 5 years haven't taught you that the rest of the UK doesn't give a fuck about NI and its loyal subjects I don't know what will.

News flash:

The general public generally doesn't really care that much about other countries or even other areas within their own country.

Says the wee republican on the dole taking uk money.

Wouldn't say a computer science degree is easy though. And highly employable. Either way I'm doing decent for myself which is the opposite of the shite he posts.

It was the 22nd article on the BBC website homepage.

Below puff pieces on twins playing in a football match and the Colosseum getting a new floor.

Actual lol

The Line of Duty piece on BBC News was longer than the bit about are we day. Loyalists are in an abusive relationship at this stage.

Because it's a shameful thing for the rest of the UK to think about. They helped create an apartheid state where religious and ethnic discrimination was at the core of the state, and they're meant to celebrate that?

Unionists dont really care what the rest of the UK thinks of this place though. It wont mean a lot to them if its not brought up by the rest of the UK or if it is.

The Queen acknowledged it with an address according to bbc news so im sure they will be happy about that though.

It was given a piece on bbc breakfast.

Are you specifically listening to the radio just to hear if the Centenary is mentioned or not?

Liz already released a statement

MockingFaithOP•

No I listen everyday just find it odd a pretty significant date in modern UK history is more or less ignored.

Because we are a basket case. In fact a badly organized one too. Go across the water and few if any people have a positive view of this place, it's just a historical headache and a mistake.

Many like to view that our problems are based in funding and politicians play that up because they get to shit on the English for our problems. But we are a bloated mess that is 10 years behind on most things and wonder why services underperform. People like to pretend that life is great here because it's cheap, but it's cheap because no one sensible wants to move here.

14
MockingFaithOP•

I dunno if I would agree with it being cheap for example, 3 bed social housing in NI is around £80/100 a month more expensive than the north of England.

more or less ignored

They probably want to ignore it, easier to avoid difficult topics that don't reflect well. What is there to celebrate? Partition was a failed experiment and we are still living with the results of that failure.

It was an abomination.

Anti-democratic creation of a 'sectarian statelet for protestants'? The establishment of a "protestant parliament for a protestant people"? A state that was heavily skewed in favor of one religion, in all areas of life from voting and housing to jobs, policing and justice.

An artificial border erected on our island and the decades of violence since.

Yay! Happy birthday? Wise up.

The only people 'celebrating' are those looking for something to rub in the faces of nationalists and republicans and call it culture.

If you want a birthday to celebrate it should be the signing of the Good Friday Agreement not state-backed sectarianism.

I'm sure any justification isn't just based on wether Greg James wishes Northern Ireland happy b'day.

I've probably heard more about my birthday today than I've heard of the centenary.

Not on the radio of course
