If you're just getting into chia, I highly recommend spinning up two instances - one for farming and one for plotting. You can keep your farmer up to date easily without stopping plotting.
Yup that's very good advice, you can do so easily with the docker with the 'harvester' and 'farmer' variables
How would you setup each instance so they play with each other?
Essentially just pass in the same key to both and you're good. As long as the plotter is placing plots in the same /plots location the farmer is looking at, that's all they need. The farmer will regularly check for new plots by itself.
Plotting can be done entirely offline so you don't even need to worry about it keeping up with the network.
Thanks for this, set up a farming docker next to the DockerHub instance that I installed the other day. Going to update the plotter to the template once it's done with the current plot.
What does profitability look like for something like 50tb?
You can take a look here https://chiacalculator.com/ (enter 45 TiB), around 5.20k a month with current price (1175$ per chia), that is if you already had all plots plotted for your 50 TB
What I don't understand is, that monthly profit isn't monthly profit, As it could take months to actually get a coin, no?
If there were pools I would understand, but surely you can't really give a monthly earning if it could take months to get said earning
Yes, you are mostly right, I was thinking this was implied, but I forget not everyone knows this. Indeed, right now it is pure luck. You could get 12 chia in 24 hours and then nothing for 1 year. It's just an average with your % of chance to win, which is based on your total space divided by the total space of the network. In the example above ^ with 45 TiB, the calculator says 'expected time to win : 15 days'. That only means that in 15 days, you will have reached the statistical chance of 100%, but that does not mean you will have won at all, (or that you only win once).
That being said, pools are coming soon, the devs are working hard at it and the protocol is supposed to come out around may 17th !
Does it actually fill up the space or can I still use the space of the disks?
it actually fills up the space on the disk.
The idea behind it is that at some point all this wasted space could actually contain files stored on the blockchain but just as all the cryptos out there this is currently a pipe dream to be able to say that they have a real world use even if nobody actually uses it for that.
Thanks for explaining

This is only an Unraid template, the docker itself is the official docker of the chia devs. (Chia-Docker). For more info on how to set this up, please refer to the support thread. To install, simply search 'Chia' in the Community Applications plugin !
