What types of Peperomia are rare in the US?

I live in the UK and have only just found out that some of the Peps that are easily found here (ie certain P. caperata cultivars), are difficult to get hold of or are expensive in the US.

I was interested in getting an idea of which Peperomias are more in demand in the US, if anyone would be so kind as to give some examples!

It would be amazing to be able to do a swap across the pond, but I think that could be a bit of a challenge in terms of import requirements.

The problem is that plant sellers, especially local, do not know what they're selling. Quitos sold locally for me in PA for about $8 for a 4in. They sell online rarely for $40 for a 4in pot. Variegated marble types get mixed in with orange crush/orange splash all the time. A cutting of said orange crush can be rarely found online for $30 for a pair of leaves while locally, you can find them for like $10. Rana verde is another one. Pink lady is another one. Abricos is another one. They're here in the US. The sellers just don't know to advertise about it.

um where in PA are you?? the nursery near me barely has any peperomia sigh I found graveolens and axillaris but that's it

Lehigh Valley. Just one more plant, curious plantaholic, Dan schantz, buza's all have varieties of caperata at any time but they do not know what they are selling. You can get lucky and find some of the "rarer" caperatas in their midst rather commonly.

Wow thanks so much! I'm about 1-2 hrs away from those places but it looks like i have to do some sort of plant crawl for a day lol

Thank you for this! I’m thinking I need to take a road trip because I’m only ~3 hours from these greenhouses!

Agreed, the big box hardware stores with garden centers just get random assortment shipments which don’t always even have labels. And our local places rarely know what they have either because of similar situations and untrained eyes. When I see something unique I’ve learned to snap it up and ask questions later.

The better tactic to utilize, honestly. And then worst case scenario, you can trade with other plant people locally if you didn't like it.

Exactly. 🪴

Oh that's really interesting - thanks for bringing this up! I guess it can be a similar situation here to an extent.

Damn, I’d love a Quito and orange crush. Have you propagated either?

Orange crush i got from a prop trade so the girl i got it from has the actual plant while im growing cuttings. Quito I didnt get to pick up, but my plant group has posted about it without knowing what it was.

Ah so cool! Please keep us plebeians in mind as your cuttings grow. I’d love to snag a leaf sometime to try it out :D

Def Pink Lady & Maculosa/Elongata.

bonus: I don't think it's even in the US yet but wow I would love Peperomia Aussie Gold.

Oh yes, those are difficult to come by here as well, particularly Pink Lady and Aussie Gold. There's an amazing UK facebook group though where the admins are importing these rarer Peps, and raffling off cuttings etc to try and make them more available here. Maybe in a few years I'll be able to get my grubby little hands on some without selling a kidney.

Quito! 😱

Eek how much do they go for? That's one of the ones that is pretty cheap here 😬

No idea bc I can’t find them online anywhere haha. The only vendor I’ve seen is actually in the uk and they don’t ship internationally :/

Greyhound! Such a cutie but seems much more available in Australia and the UK

Yes, that's another one I've gotten pretty cheaply here! To be honest though I still haven't figured out what exactly the difference is between it and Burbella...

Dang you are so lucky!! It and Quito are def on the top of my wish list! I thinkkk Burbella and Greyhound are the same plant, just different names? But if they're different I want both hahaha

Which peperomias are rare for you but common in the US?

efreckmannOP•

I've only started hoarding collecting peperomia over the last year, so I'm still finding out about what types there are - so take this with a pinch of salt! Aussie Gold is also completely unavailable here, as I don't think any collectors have imported it yet.

Pink Lady is definitely even less available here than it is in the US. A couple of collectors imported some over the last month, and they are still prohibitively expensive (rightly so, as I think there's only a handful of plants in the country!). An unrooted Pink Lady cutting sold last month for ~70 GBP!

Harmony's Great Pumpkin and Gold Dust Woman are unavailable here. I think there's one Gold Dust Woman plant in the country, but cuttings are expensive and few and far between. I don't think anyone has Great Pumpkin here.

That's just a few examples! I'm not 100% sure of which peperomias are actually dirt cheap there, that are more difficult to get hold of here.

Aw honestly if I could figure out how to do it, I'd love to be able to send you guys boxes of Greyhound and Quito!

I've asked in a Peperomia group that I'm in, and the consensus seems to be that Greyhound and Burbella are different: Greyhound is more compact with smaller leaves and has reddish undersides, whereas Burbella is more silvery and has more pronounced bubbles, apparently.

At one point I would say the Pink Lady but they’re so readily available in Florida. A nursery I go to just dropped some 4 in Pink Ladies for $9. I’ve also ran across a HGP for $2.50 as well in a terrarium bin as well as Abricos for $7. A lot of retailers just don’t know. I can’t wait for the Quito and Aussie Gold to be more available
