I’d have the M5.

Me too! It’s the best looking and most special IMO. Definitely wouldn’t daily it though...

NA V10 in an estate car is ridiculous, with the tight exhaust they aren’t far off sounding like F1 cars.

Grandpa benz for life! Still one of the best sleepers ever made, especially the wagon variant here in Germany.

Hearse 55 AMG

C55 or E55 is a really tough choice.

C55 N/A wicked reliable, lighter, cheaper, rarer.

E55 Supercharged, fairly reliable for a Mercedes, nicer interior, spacier, more common.

C55 for rarity and handling.

The trunk is still massive. Who cares about rear passengers? They should be thankful they're even getting a ride!

The audi just looks so clean and understated. The new rs6 looks great, but compared to this there's way too much going on.

Just looks like an a3 to me. There’s understated and then there is just dreary, the Audi is the latter for me.

M5 any day of the week. Just a muffler delete and those things sound like pure race cars.

There's a reason Clarkson like the M5 so much.

6
MultitronicOP•

Yeah they sound insane with decent exhausts

Enjoy the maintenance costs lol.

If it was as reliable as an e55 I'd have chosen it as well, but it isn't.. Those m5s are a right nightmare to own

Absolutely, I'd still buy it any day. It's worth it personally to me. It's been a dream car of mine since it came out in 2005 and my dad bought a E60 525i in 2007.

There's just something about it, it's the perfect combination of naturally aspirated high revving power, luxury and timeless design. It's an entry to the super car world in my opinion and with that comes supercar maintenance and cost.

I get it, I bought an unreliable dream car of mine too so I get it lol

that’s where the E60 550i comes in.

Lmaoooo I don’t think you buy any of these for the sake of reliability.

I'll have 1 RS6 with a medium drink please

Toss me the keys to the E55 wagon and I'd cherish it forever.

It's funny how the presenter is comparing the prices to a new Skoda. Dude, they're older German cars. You're going to double your initial budget over the first few years (months?) of ownership. Especially buying an E60/E61 M5 is like being given a grenade that's about to go off.

Mate, it’s tongue in cheek. And honestly I think this is something people do, maybe not with a Skoda though. You can have a brand new slightly mundane 3 series estate, or an older super high performance estate for the same money but will be shelling out for maintenance.

Everyone loves to overestimate German car maintenance costs. Ya they are expensive but compared to the depreciation you’d pay if you bought something new it’s fuck all. The best vehicle to buy if you have 35k is a 25k German car. Better car then you’d get new or lightly used for that price by miles and with the initial savings and lack of depreciation you’ll come out ahead in the long run unless something huge goes wrong which is very rare if you do preventative maintenance.

I've heard that the e55 amgs of that era are relatively reliable

Air suspension is the only real weak point, but you can swap in regular dampers relatively cheap. Insurance is pretty expensive here in Germany tho, otherwise I'd have on of them.

They can be very reliable, and being as old as they are, parts are cheap and easy to find.
