It could be a neurological condition they have and they don't realize they're doing it.

Mirroring is a strategy for people to feel closer and more comfortable. I could see someone awkwardly doing so to gain closeness.

It's shows that you are listening. It's a trick taught in a lot of "how to talk to people" books
