Weddings are important cultural event and are generally well worth the money.

Wedding are an important institution as they serve as an opportunity for a couple to publicly declare commitment to each other which helps start the family on the right foot.

Wedding are also a great opportunity for two different extended families to intermingle and get to know each other, again helping the couple's lives later down the line.

Of course one should have a wedding that is financially ruinous, but a party (with a reasonable budget) for two families to celebrate the couple's commitment is well worth it.

Wow, courageous take, you’re really going out on a limb here. It’s not like humans have made the institution of marriage and it’s celebratory event known as weddings a mainstay across every culture for all of human history or anything like that.

Edit: Sorry I just couldn’t resist framing it like an asshole this way, completely cool if you just want to point out the importance of weddings lol

Maybe society as a whole, but the anti-wedding on Reddit is very popular

But you guys aren't living in reddit, what matters is how it affects the real life in the end.

I agree with you, but a vast majority of redditors dislike the concept of weddings

I guess you're right, but even then reddit is just a part of the entire demographic.

Why is this important, why do you need an event to do this? Where is the significance? "Starting a family on the right foot" doesn't really mean anything, how, why?

Weddings can be expensive and the rings are very likely to be scams. I don't want some big fancy event when I get married. I wouldn't elope either but just have a nice smaller family gathering. I'm not religious so a minister wouldn't even have to be present all you need for marriage is the certificate, the rest is just fluff.

It's important culturally, but it's definitely not worth the money. You can have the main parts of a wedding without spending 30k because most of the money is going toward things that have nothing to do with traditions, like fancy catering, a DJ, and an expensive venue. It's the expectations of weddings that have made them a chore instead of a fun experience. They expect you to look amazing, serve great food, and have a lot of entertainment. If people wanted entertainment then they should not have attended the wedding with high expectations. Invite 50 people and save yourself the time, money, and stress.

I don't get the point of weddings (the paid ceremony, not marriage in general), complete waste of money for a single day. Even a fairly budget wedding, unless you have a load of disposable money then it is unneccessary. Families can intermingle without having to fork out large sums of money you don't have. But, spending exorbitant amounts on a ring is even worse since people really tend to go overboard there for a tiny piece of shiny metal.
