This is a great idea in that she certainly deserves such recognition. Eleyna is a poet, in that she has helped many of us so clearly envision a world where information is freely available to all and the unfettered exchange of knowledge is not a privilege enjoyed only by those of means. At least within the realm of education, projects like sci-hub have given me a sense of the future once again. That there is a shared horizon all of us are striving for, something that we seem to lack in so many other aspects of social life.

The neoliberal ghouls are trying to destroy her because they clearly have contempt for humanity. They claim that she is a Russian saboteur, the United States is persecuting her at the behest of corporate interests which break the law as a matter of routine, meanwhile countries like Canada are trying to pass laws that will allow ISPs to block domains which infringe copyright. It’s a wholesale assault on any aspect of social life which stubbornly resists this craven drive to commodify everything and anything.

Unfortunately these neoliberal ghouls are the same ones that control who gets the Nobel prize, so she won’t get it. Take the example of the Cuban doctors who went overseas to treat COVID across the world - there’s a campaign to award them the Nobel Prize, but instead of supporting this bid the US labelled Cuba - no joke - a state sponsor of terrorism. And when asked if Biden would remove it, his spokesperson said “Cuba is not a priority.”

Cuba draws the ire of the US because it defiantly pursues its independence despite a 60+ year trade embargo at the hands of the Americans. All for the crime of refusing to be exploited.

Eleyna spat in the eye of an unjust IP regime which allows publishers to profit from the work of researchers who are paid by the public, to produce knowledge for the public. Her principle is simple: knowledge should be provided to the widest possible audience for the minimum possible cost. That is a moral position, but it’s fatal to the organizing principle of our present system which seeks to maximize profit from every aspect of life at the expense of the ordinary person through usurious rent extraction and monopolistic licensing schemes.

Eleyna and others like her who use and support these services similarly refuse to be exploited - and that’s why they won’t ever give her a Nobel Prize. Because that would require the ruling class admit that it is actually the WTO IP system which is criminal, not the people who strive to overcome it.

Edit: if the Lenin Prize still existed (or something similar), she would get it. That award was for true revolutionaries, people dedicated in one way or another to the liberation of ordinary people from oppression, ignorance and alienation. The mood of our time is ugliness, we should celebrate those who give us ways to push back.

Would be awesome if we had a Noble Prize of Scince!

That would certainly be nice but we know won't happen. But it doesn't matter. She already has a lot of respect from everyone in academia. She will always be remembered for disrupting the academic publishing system which was clearly a market failure.

Well, you are right in that the correct phrase is "Nobel Prize", but for me she definitely is a noble human being. Isn't fighting for a just cause noble enough?

In my honest opinion, unfortunately, no. :( Technically, using sci-hub violates the ethics of research.

Although I'd want her to win one since she has been really saving my ass since college

The same prize given to Obama for peace? Absolutely not.

A prize for a service that hasn't delivered any new content since 2020? Less hero-worship and more anonymity would benefit open science and open access. Should not revolve around one person.

No, I just think our efforts should be focused on long-term open access to academic journals. Look at this subreddit, half the posts are about people having genuine tech issues and logistical issues accessing sci-hub but rather than providing assistant and offering workarounds we have people clogging up the thread with memes and posting stuff such as "abolish copyright"and prizes and Twitter. Go look at some of the other Reddit threads that discuss darknet offering access, trading, and releases about TV, games, movies, comics, magazines and they don't have this cult worship over one person with postings about "abolish copyright" and followings on Twitter. And you what, if I want to watch movie not yet released in my country because of stupid paywall, I can. Meanwhile sci-hub offers no new releases except for media interviews and Twitter postings and then people question why there is trouble with Indian courts and FBI? Go look at r/scholar and count how many posts are about Cuban doctors while folks are offering access and exchanging journals. People most and request that they need and have and go on about their lives not wasting postings about embargoes in Cuba.
