Is a Delay normal when you play YouTube Videos?

Hi, I’m new with AdGuard. I couldn’t help but notice when I ever play a YouTube video, the ad is indeed blocked, but there is like 5 to 7 sec delay before the YouTube video actually starts playing. Is this normal? Cause in the past I’ve had Ad blockers that would play the YouTube video immediately. I understand that AdGuard fights the ads but I feel there shouldn’t be a 5 to 7 sec delay before every YouTube video with ads. Otherwise I would rather watch a 10 sec ad, than 7 secs of pure blackness before a YouTube video is played.

This isn't normal but I believe this is related to several aspects.

  1. The extensions/filters that you are using
  2. PC/laptop specs
  3. Internet speed
  4. DNS

If you enabled a lot of filters, the slowdown will occur. If your pc/laptop doesn't have enough RAM (recommended 8GB and above), this will also happen. same goes with internet and DNS.

Sigh I’m using my iPhone 8. Oh well I might as well try another ad blocker. Thanks for the help anyway

I’m a Wipr user and it is also failing to block YouTube ads since 2 weeks ago. I’ve seen that other ad blockers are failing also due to YouTube finding a way to circumvent content blockers.

I just tried AdGuard and as you say, it takes a while for the video to play. I think this is because AdGuard is not truly blocking the ad, it is just playing it in the background while showing you a black screen with the YouTube logo to make you think it is blocking it.

Waiting to skip the ad with no ad blocker takes the same amount of time for AdGuard to “delay” the video you want to watch.

I’m still looking for a solution to this, YouTube ads are unbearable. Anyway... AdGuard sucks lol

It is not normal. I had AdGuard Pro installed last week with default filters and YT worked fine. Ads blocked and no delays. Today I again installed same AdGuard Pro app and now I see few sec delay in some videos.

That’s what happen to me. This sucks since I paid 12 bucks for the lifetime subscription. Me and my dumb ass. I don’t get it, I have the latest update installed and just have default settings and filters. I also have a pretty fast internet connection. Sometimes when I use the desktop mode the ad is NOT blocked. Wtf Adgaurd. Time to try a different Adblock for my iPhone 8.

I don't think that you should be angry ad AdGuard because YT is actively trying to circumvent all adblocking. AdGuard was very quick to go around YT changes and it is still only ad blocker that works on iOS as far as I know.

I recommend that you wait a little for them to find a fix again for YT fix of AdGuard fix of a YT fix... you get the picture. 😀 That is what I will do anyway.

Quick workaround that I found is to 3D touch on YT video you want to watch and then it won't display ad.

Hmm you do make a valid point there. I guess I will wait then. If there is one thing I am more than 100% certain is that I will never use the YouTube App, or pay it’s ridiculous subscription fee for features that should be free.

I only use few utility/productivity apps that have some offline ability. In my opinion rest is only glorified webpages that in most cases can’t be trusted. I removed YT app few years ago together with all other apps like that. Safari and adblocker FTW!

On iOS this is normal, please read the explanation here: https://adguard.com/en/blog/youtube-ads-in-safari-explained.html

There’s a solution to this, not ideal, but this is the best you can have at the moment: https://adguard.com/en/blog/how-to-add-a-shortcut-to-block-youtube-ads.html

That explains everything. It’s not because Adgaurd sucks at their job, but YouTube being greedy jerks and changing their algorithm to prevent adblockers from doing their job. It’s great to know this information. I will give the work around solution a try.

I had the same issue with adguard. I just found bolt the other day in the new safari extensions on iOS 15. It’s been blocking all ads including YouTube without a delay. Much happier with it than adguard.

OMFG Bolt is amazing! No more delays! Sorry AdGuard your 5 to 10 sec delays was getting on my nerves! Thank you for replying and letting me know!

No problem! I had the same issue and was searching for a few hours for something that worked. I’m hoping others will stumble upon this and save some time! Enjoy!

I've been using adguard for years and finally stopped about 6 months ago because no matter what I did something always suffered.

Performance then internet speed then having to tinker with settings constantly to get it to block.....one thing after another always.

Finally I started paying for paid versions of my apps, then bought the YouTube premium subscription.

I pay the monthly fees for YouTube that comes with the music app, all my main apps are paid for and I never have a single issue with anything and zero ads. Well worth it for me.
