Six years ago Conan explained how 'Without Borders' shows is how he wants to do his production in the future. Seems highly likely his HBO show will be based on that concept.

Conan Without Borders will continue as a stand-alone tbs show. So I wouldn’t expect a lot of overlap with that concept. But I would hope the MAX show will be remote-heavy to get Conan outside of the studio which is where he really shines.

In a recent Marc Maron podcast with Robert Smigel he talked about how when he was at Late Night, he wouldn't even let Conan do remotes because the pressure was too high for a few years. He laughs about it now because he considers Conan the GOAT with remotes.

I thought everyone knew: Conan's upcoming HBO series is actually a fictional buddy cop show where Conan plays an alcoholic "loose cannon" who closely resembles an aging Belgian woman and Sona Movsesian plays his long-suffering and aggressively Armenian partner. Hijinks ensue!

How do you find Maron's podcast? I tried to get into him twice and just couldn't. The last time I tried to give him a go was his Mark Normand episode. I gave up after 20 minutes in and still no Normand.

Unless I like someone's personality, I really DGAF about what they have to say, but it usually helps if they actually have something to say. I find Maron drones on like a dullard. Like he began the Normand episode talking about a lunch with his brother & the gf. Like wtf who cares?

Sorry I got to this late. I love his podcast. You can skip the initial Maron rant that's in every episode, a lot of people actually do that and Marc acknowledges that that portion of the podcast isn't for everyone. It can also depend who he's talking to. I do think he's a great interviewer when you can tell he really cares about who's he interviewing. The Smigel interview is fantastic. As much as it sucks now because we know things, the first Louis CK episode was commonly considered to be one of the greatest podcast episodes ever made.

Maron is a little neurotic and insecure still and that can turn people off to his rants, but ocassionally he's so raw that it's both heartbreaking and great to listen to. I've cried in only one episode and it was right after his girlfriend Lynn died. He was so honest about his pain that it felt cathartic in a way for me.

There's a reason why Obama of all people wanted to do his podcast. He's legitimately a master of the podcast interview craft.

Hey thanks for sharing your insights. I don't much mind Maron as an actor though I couldn't get into his standup, so he's always been an "eh"/can-do-with/without. But I'm running out of podcasts, and I really enjoy conversations with personalities.

You've now intrigued me with the "greatest podcast ever made", but only time will tell if I can work myself up to him again.

I forgot he’s mentioned this before, good call!

I hope so because it is a fantastic series.

Don't mean to interrupt the topic but this Q&A reminded me of the other Q&A they did in Korea where I thought Conan was very testy with Bley. I've p-ssed bosses off before, aaaand the beginning gave me flashbacks O.O

He eased off afterwards of course, but it was enough that I've never forgotten it!

I expect Conan on HBO Max to be analogous to what The Grand Tour was for Top Gear (for the classic 3 blokes). More remotes and less celebrity involvement.

I love those 3 blokes. The first season of GT was kind of rocky at first. It do felt like it's scripted but it gets better as it goes forward and brings back those feelings I felt on the old TG.

Anyway, nice comparison. I can see and understand your point clearly and it's just how I pictured it on my mind.

Conan without borders was a gem! his remotes are fantastic! love to see him being him instead of hearing him have to talk to a celebrity trying to sell their latest project

it's seriously the best. i wish there will be more. will there be?? his humanity really shines in these (and of course his humor).

maybe he is talking about that his future has more remotes and less in-studio content... i would say that the new show can be kinda like snl that, instead of having a guest having an interview and showing some video, he can go and do some skits and bits or making a remote doing some shit.... and it will be really cool tbh

I would absolutely rather watch Conan Without Borders a few times a year (maybe with some random remotes peppered in), than a daily show where he hosts celebrities plugging their latest project.
