The writer of the article kept confusing Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos---they're not the same. We were just told by Apple that Dolby Atmos requires a studio which was designed to record in Dolby Atmos...

Because people are confused that it was five separate terms being announced.

Digital Masters, Spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, lossless, Hi-res lossless.

An Atmos studio isn’t required to create Atmos tracks. Dolby Atmos is simply a (very advanced) form of surround and can be created by anyone anywhere with the right tools

That’s not what this article says. It requires a very specific set of hardware. https://www.musicradar.com/news/an-audio-engineer-explains-why-dolby-atmos-music-is-definitely-going-to-supersede-stereo

Well it doesn’t. Although currently there isn’t any cheap software that can create an Atmos track. Although I think there are some plug-ins for cheaper software that can

Does this also mean that Indie artists‘ music will be available in Lossless on AM if they submitted/submit files like WAV?

I’m pretty sure almost every distributor has lossless audio… so the transition to lossless should be fine.

They have lossless versions of every track on there, don’t sweat it.

I’ve been in a few bands, and every multi-platform distribution partner requires WAV files to be uploaded.

Apple has really confused the market with this.

Spatial Audio seams to mean recreating a multi dimensional experience from two speakers and localising the source in space.

This is only available with headphones that have location tracking. AirPods Pro (Max).

Dolby Atmos for Music allows you to recreate a multi dimensional experience from two (or more) speakers. This is available for bluetooth headphones with H1/W1 chips and wired headphones but doesn't localise the source. Why other bluetooth headphones are excluded by Apple is unknown. Why Dolby Atmos for Video is excluded is also unknown.

Of course, Apple then confuses us further by saying that Spacial Audio is available on the iMac. The iMac appears to produce Dolby Atmos.

Did I mention that Apple has really confused the market with this?

They confuse us more by specifically mentioning the H1/W1 chip in their press release for Dolby Atmos.

Apple Music announces Spatial Audio

Also, there is no indication that Dolby Atmos for Video will be enabled for all headphones. This could (theoretically) be done already with iOS 14.6?

The press release would indicate to the contrary. But, as I mentioned before, Apple haven't done a good job of communicating this clearly and have only succeeded in confusing us all. I'm happy to be corrected.
