How much do we need to know about drugs and their effect on neurotransmitters?

Is knowing the general effect of each category of drugs (depressants, stimulants, etc) enough? Or do we actually need to know what each drug specifically does? Please help I’m spending too much time trying to memorize all of this😭

It should not be that much. However, you should remember certain neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine because they are related to depression and schizophrenia. I remember one question asking about what neurotransmitter does alcohol mimic (GABA).

As for drugs, there should not be much. However, do know some names of them and the mental illness that they target on (like xanax and anxiety or something). These will be helpful on the MCQ and sometimes FRQ since there is a question talking about biological treatment to phobia.

Good luck with your exam! To check out some awesome slides, feel free to visit appsychprep.com

I actually remember there being no nuerotransmitter/drug questions on my exam. Maybe a couple, but that's probably it.

However, there are different administrations. I recommend knowing the main neurotransmitters and what they do (search up "neurotransmitters AP Psychology table"). As for the drugs themselves, just know what falls under the 4 categories (stimulants, depressants, opiods, and hallucinogens). I def don't think you need to know what each one does.

Good luck!

That’s a pretty small part of the exam. Just know which drug causes which neurotransmitter to be affected as well as the types of drugs(like barbiturates, stimulants, etc.). In was actually more worried of Units 5 and 9 before I took the exam
