Scifi book -- main characters are a human male and female, with serial ports attached to their skulls. Secondary character is an AI who's physical hardware was originally intended to be installed in a large writing desk, but as the book starts the trio are fleeing from Earth to Mars.
Something about the AI being allowed to use the memory of another device when it is in low power mode, and dominates some area of what could be considered an internet.
Haven't ready it in 25+ years and have been searching/stumped.
