TESL questions
Not sure if there would be a more appropriate place to post this, but I'm pretty sure r/iwantout is where I've seen this topic come up most. I'm 21 and live in the states, graduated from High School, but have been hesitant of going to university here. I've finally decided it's about time that I fix that though, my original plan was to claim citizenship in Malta through descent and go to university somewhere like Sweden, but I found out it will take upwards of 2 years for them to process all the forms, so that kind of shit on my plans to get out quickly. I figured I might as well start going to school here at a cheap community college while I wait for the processing of my citizenship.
Anyways, enough background/rambling, a bachelors degree and TESL certificate is all that is required for teaching English in places like Asia? Would it be worthwhile to pursue a particular bachelors program to make me a better candidate from an employer's perspective? I found a college near by where I live that has the Oxford TESL certificate program, is that a more credible program than others? or does it even make a difference where I get the certificate? I've seen online classes, though I'm a bit reluctant to take those because I feel like I would get more out of a classroom experience for this particular type of study. Also, I always hear about people teaching in Thailand, Japan, China, but never India. Is there a reason for that? I spent some time in India after High School studying music and learning Hindi, so I wouldn't mind being able to do that again if possible, has anyone ever taught English in India? or heard of anyone teaching in India? Any answers would be greatly appreciated, thanks
