Can access to Spotify be fought for on a restricted internet service?

Hi Reddit,

My college has some pretty ridiculous internet restrictions. I find that I constantly have to submit reviews for the same sites over and over to get them unblocked, but this is besides the point.

I am studying music for my undergrad, and I use Spotify a large amount to access a wide variety of classical music however, my school recently blocked access to it. I asked them about their actions and this was their response: "Unfortunately, because Spotify is a file sharing facility, the university cannot allow it access to institutional servers without compromising security. While we are fortunate to have few restrictions on site access, Spotify is definitely one that we can't access."

So my two questions are:

  1. Because of how it allows users to access the music, can Spotify even be fought for to maintain access on my campus internet?
  2. What are a few selling points that I can use when I argue for its access?

Thank you!
