Is there any way to generalize the Mersenne prime series?

I've been interested in primes for quite some time now and was wondering if the formulas that work for 2^p-1 could be adapted to (n^p-1)/(n-1) or n^p-(n-1). I don't have enough mathematical prowess to prove it, only a hunch. Do you guys have any ideas?
