aDOSbox on Kindle Fire
Just a little glimpse of something you can do with the Fire without rooting it. It works best for text-based adventures (that suggestion centering solely around the on screen mouse).
If you're curious for a brief how-to:
-
Go to Settings>Device> and Allow Installation of Applications from unknown sources.
-
Visit http://androiddosbox.appspot.com/ and download the installer, unpack the file and it'll install easily.
-
Connect your Fire to your computer via USB and dump your LEGALLY ACQUIRED dos titles to the SDcard. Make sure to come up with an easy file system, because accessing the folders through aDOSbox is a bit of a pain.
-
Disconnect your Fire, start up aDOSbox, and open up the on screen keyboard by pulling up the bottom screen menu and going to Options>OnScreen keyboard.
-
Type in "cd FOLDERNAME" (without the quotes) where FOLDERNAME is the title of the folder where your DOS exe is located.
-
Then type "GAMENAME.exe" (again without the quotes) where GAMENAME is the name of the executable you wish to run.
At this point, your game should begin running. If it doesn't, be sure to check and see if you have the file name correct/correct name of directory.
You will want to adjust the on screen control set up, which can be done through the bottom menu>options>SDL Settings. The mouse will take some getting used to, just use the on screen arrows to move the mouse about the touchscreen.
I also suggest determining what hotkey is the save state for whatever title you are playing (since it will vary from game to game) and assign that a key.
If you end up having issues with sound in-game, access the in-game configuration (totally dependent on what title you are playing) and increase the size of the audio buffer.
That should just about cover it. Like I said before, this is a neat thing to do with your Fire that doesn't require a root for optimum performance. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.
