Pull Ryan PAC
If we raise or spend any significant amount of money on this project ($1000), it will have to be reported to the FEC. Rather than having every single one of us sending the FEC individual expenditures, I can can compile them all for us and send the reports to the FEC.
Since I will be starting a Reddit PAC next month anyway (and have been in the planning stages for it for several months), I nominate/volunteer my upcoming PAC as the official Pull Ryan PAC.
However, I will be unable to get things started until the end of January (the launch is going to coincide with the publication of my ebook, "How To Run For Congress"). When the book is published, I will be doing a fundraiser with it - the first $5000 of proceeds will go towards the PAC. (It's only $5k because individuals are only allowed to contribute that much to a PAC.)
You can search through my post history to learn about me, or visit my subreddit to see that I'm a pretty standup guy and I know a fair bit about campaign finance law.
Additionally, if this really takes off, if we're raising a really significant amount of money (I think the amount is over $25k), we will need to register a form 8871 with the IRS. I can do that, too.
As the treasurer, I won't be handling any of your money. I can, however, count what you spent as a donation to the rPAC and then report it as an expenditure to the FEC.
The problem with the current laws is there isn't anything on the books for an organization like Reddit: we operate like a beehive, individual parts doing individual jobs for a common cause with no hierarchy (the queen bee kind of ruins the analogy, no?). No other political organization is organized that way, really. To play it safe, we really should register a PAC.
Whether you decide to let me be the treasurer or not, my advice is that if you have already spent any money on this (domain registrants, I'm looking at you), keep your receipts!
Other notes:
-
The upcoming PAC does not yet have a name. I was considering, "Test PAC, Please Ignore."
-
I am not a lawyer, my background is in education.
-
I live in Phoenix, AZ, and the PAC would be based out of my home address. I can't afford a real office, especially since our office is this subreddit. The official website for now will be the r/rpac subreddit.
-
I am going to go play pub-poker with my wife for a few hours, but will answer any questions/concerns you have when I get back.
