New Year's Eve Happenings?

I'll be visiting family in Sacramento this weekend. Thought it would be a good idea to spend NYE in San Francisco. I am not a native. I will be traveling with with minors (so no booze :( ).

What options would be available to us? Something at the beach? Be with the other tourists near the Embarcadero/Pier 39?
