Future of employment in biological sciences
As a PhD student studying immunology I worry about what real-world opportunities there will be upon graduation. Only a small percentage of graduates will attain tenure track academic positions and the rest are left to industry. With the current economic issues it seems industry jobs are getting harder to come by. It seems like bioinformatics & computational biology is booming. Would this be a better field since you could step into jobs away from biology? I really prefer the topic of immunology, and have limited programming experience, but at some point you have consider whether you will have a job or not. Would it be worth the extra 1.5 years of class to get the required programming background and a minor in bioinformatics? or are graduate minors really worth anything when it comes to getting a job?
