My Dad refuses to watch games LIVE -- Can someone him realize how wrong this is?

Whenever my dad watches a sporting game he prefers to tape it and fast forward through the commercials. This always causes tension between us because I feel like the game is ruined if everything is dictated by a remote control, and we only have one TV so I have to wait. Can someone please explain to him why this is breaking a fundamental rule in sports?
