My husband is having a torrid affair...
... with a video game.
we are in our mid-30s with lovely kids. We each work long hours and don't have a lot of time to spend together. Any time he has, he is playing a video game. He has been "quitting" now for weeks, usually 4-8+ hours at a time, often shooing the kids away. He tells me he loves me. He tells me I'm hot. Then he returns to the video game. He tells me he is quitting, usually as he is rolling up his sleeves to get started on another night of gaming.
Has he had such affairs before? YES! Oh Lordy, Lordy, he HAS! He even waxes regret about those times, wishing aloud he had spent time with me instead.
Am I a codependent freakazoid clingy type? NO! I am suffocated easily and NEED my own time and space often. I do, however, enjoy connecting mentally and emotionally with my spouse every now and then.
I might as well not exist - unless he wants sex. In which case he appears and tries to be all amorous, as if he hadn't just ignored me for the last month in favor of his first-person shooter.
Might I add that when I get engrossed in a novel, movie, or TV show and he doesn't get attention, he whines?
I tire of this and like to believe I deserve more. This is only an additional symptom of what I perceive as a lack of effort towards our relationship. I have communicated all of this in plain english, multiple times throughout our many years together. He usually only hears me if there are tears involved (I swear, not often). Then he'll pay attention to me for a week or two.
And no, i have not "let myself go" - i am the same weight pre-kids, am clean and well-groomed, and dress better than I did when we first met. He has gained 20 lbs since we met.
Why not join him? Firstly, I suck at video games. Secondly, who would watch the kids?
I know I should not rely on him for my own happiness. But what is the point of remaining in a relationship when it leaves me feeling just as lonely, or perhaps more so, than being single?
Reddit, am I out of line? Should I find a jailhouse penpal? Amuse myself with Taylor Lautner movies while he is gaming?
