How do I wear this headpiece/flower thing for NYE?

So I am super excited for my NYE outfit, but I'm not sure on how to wear this headpiece flowery thing that I bought. I absolutely love it but I'm just a little stumped as to how exactly to do my hair. It's quite large (bigger than my fist), so I don't want it to look gaudy or "too much".

I am planning on curling my hair - pretty tightly, but a bit messy looking (using a 1 inch clipless, most likely). But from there, I'm at a loss as to how to use this piece. I was thinking of taking a section from my hair and sort of clipping it back, using that piece at the "clipping point" (new term I'm inventing). I definitely don't want all of my hair up.

Do you all have any ideas?? Any pictures or tutorials that may help me?
