I have a question about hair... is there someone knowledgeable on hair that can help me?

Hello all. I have never really messed with hair so I am clueless. Yesterday a good friend kind of convinced me we should put red streaks in our hair. It turned out nice for her but really really terrible for me. I now want to just dye my hair black. To preface, my natural hair color is a dark brown.

To put in the red streaks, I bleeched random regions of my hair and then put in red hair die. The bleached parts turned super blonde so that worked. The red hair color is like a light red, way lighter than my normal color. No good. apparently my hair only looks good dark.

So my question now is, if I use a black hair dye, will that mask the red? Also, should I bleech my entire hair before applying black hair dye? My hair is a dark brown color, and one time I tried to dye my hair black and it didn't turn black, but a very dark brown. Yesterday was the first time I'd tried bleeching it, and I'll say it really made the red show up. So do I need to bleach to make the black show up?

Sorry for asking. I have no one to ask and don't want to offend my friend because she feels bad for the hair turning out the way it did although it is not her fault
