Decorative aquarium backings: Pros? Cons?

I've seen so many beautiful setups on this subreddit -- freshwater and saltwater -- and many if not all are sans that large sheet background you can get at any fish store.

I have this type of backing behind my tank at present, and I was wondering what the consensus, if any, was on them, either aesthetically or from a tank-health standpoint.
