Ipod stuck on connect to itunes screen

I just got a ipod for christmas. Its stuck on the "connect to itunes" screen. I have tried holding the on/off button and home button to turn it off. I have tried holding the home button while plugging it in. Nothing seems to work. I have done google search after google search following all directions. NOTHING IS WORKING. PLEASE HALP!!
