How can science explain apparitions/hauntings?

I'm referring to those supposedly verified and legitimate pictures of spirit apparitions and ghost appearances, etc. Is there any grounding in the scientific field on the topic of ghosts?

I know that the idea of ghosts is obviously farfetched in the scientific community, but some of the cases I've seen that are supposedly verified seem a bit extreme to be coincidences or camera glitches.
