iPhone 4: need help transferring music.

Updating to the new iTunes and IOS 5 screwed me over plenty, but now I can't even manage music at all. I've read that they took out the drag and drop mechanism(which is painful enough) but now I can't even add any music at all to my iTunes so that i can sync the music through a playlist onto the iPhone. Am I ignoring something obvious? What can I do?
