Sending PMs advertising subreddit

Hey all, i just received a pm from another mod suggesting that i join his subreddit (based on a comment i made on r/askreddit). Is there rules about this? I'd consider doing the same myself (from relevant comments) but i think its worth checking..

Is this frowned upon? is this a common sense thing? (just dont abuse it)
