Am I just Psyching myself out? (Pilonidal Cyst+Details inside)

Long story short, I've finally decided to take care of this, I've KNOWINGLY had it roughly 4 years, and the first time I discovered it was when it popped after falling onto a tree root right on the tailbone. . I ignored it as I was too embarrassed and it finished oozing and healed. But now it's been there for so long and beginning to hurt. I've read that it can get pretty bad if left untreated (and that was only have a year tops), and now I'm expecting the worst. How bad could it be? Or am I psyching myself out?
