Sorry to have to ask this but...

How do I go about getting those initial 5 minute open mic spots to try stand up for the first time? I know it's like "go to the club and ask", but howw do you know where there are clubs around you. I live in Massachusetts, within driving distance to Boston but closer to Worcester. I've tried searching online but only find the popular clubs that already have comedians booked. I'd really, really appreciate the help. I've spent the last couple of months writing jokes and feel like I can put together a few different 5 minute sets and get a feel for what type of jokes I should be writing. Plus I want to make sure I don't shit my pants.
