Young college undergrad wants to look into stock market

I am 18 years old and I find it fascinating to read about the history of companies... to see what brought their success or downfall. This leads me to want to invest someday in companies in order to make some money on the side.

Am I just living with my head in the clouds? What are the necessary steps to take?
