How to make myself enjoy folk?

Hi reddit. I am dating a girl who is deep into folk music. She listens to a massive amount of folk and plays guitar and banjo herself.

I usually listen to a lot of hip-hop, disco, and punk music. I have never really heard folk music until I met her. Part of this I believe is cultural: I am a first generation in America so I feel like I don't have a connection to American folk music. Part of it may be that my musical tastes are hard to change now that I'm in my mid-twenties.

But now it's become apparent that folk is a big part of her life. So I ask: how can I make myself enjoy folk music more? For a noob, what artists would you suggest I check out? Do you think it's a cultural thing or is that a bullshit argument?

Any thoughts are appreciated.
