Will visiting companies in-person help in acquiring a job?

Reddit, I've been in search of work for about the past 7 months, after receiving a BS (in Materials Science: polymers, though really anything chemistry related will do), and I will be soon moving to another state, where I'll be about an hour's drive from a few big cities. Are there things I can do in-person at prospective companies that would make a difference, after driving to the city and stopping at a bunch of places?

My previous living area is a bit in the middle of nowhere and my degree doesn't really exist there, so basically my entire search so far has been online and through school contacts. I would really appreciate some advice.
