I'm sure I am not phrasing this question correctly, I apologize, and I don't mean to sound ignorant. I've been debating religion with my mother recently, and I consider myself a well-informed gnostic Atheist, and there is one question I've been dying to ask but I just can't seem to put it in understandable terms for her. I want to as "Why would scientists create theories in order to disprove religion?" Why would they "fake" anything? Their job is to understand what is going on around them, if it conflicts with a religion, so be it. Right? What do Christians think of scientists? The logic my mother displays is so circular. It goes something like this: "Scientists make-up theories to disprove religion because they are Atheists!!" To which I pose the question, "Why are the Atheists?" which results in "Because of their science nonsense." You get where I am going with this. Can someone help me pose this question in a way to make easier? OR, can someone tell me what Christians think of scientists? (To be more specific, my Mom is somewhere in between Evangelical and Lutheran, if that helps)
Also, book recommendations for her would be great too. She won't read Dawkins or Hitch because they are "too sarcastic and mean."
