Operation Entertainment: Another way to hit SOPA-supporting companies where it hurts: their wallets.
I know this will be more difficult than boycotting GoDaddy. I know that it won't have the instant repercussions and it will require us to give up far more. The fact of the matter is this, though:
The following companies support SOPA:
*Directors Guild of America
*Motion Picture Association of America
*Screen Actor's Guild
*Comcast
*Viacom
*Sony Pictures Entertainment
To name others. Now, this boycott won't be as simple as the last one. It will require more coordination, more planning, and above all, it will demand that we, as Americans, change the way we live out daily lives.
I propose the following changes:
Effective IMMEDIATELY:
*Stop patronizing movie theaters ENTIRELY. This one shouldn't be too hard. For the first several weeks of movie screening, all of the profits go directly to the company that produced the movie, and therefore the MPAA, Director's Guild, and other associations responsible for SOPA.
*Stop watching runs of series shown on TV. Yes, this is a lot to ask. However, it will hurt the organizations in decreased viewership and therefore will make it harder for them to support this legislature.
Effective by 1/15/11:
*If you utilize Comcast's service, find a different provider and cut your service. If this is not possible, cut your cable. It is possible to get by with just internet. Very few people need a landline telephone these days and the cable packages pull in a lot of cash.
*Cut subscription to Hulu. This will make it even harder but will achieve the same end result.
If we follow these steps, it is entirely possible to do to these organizations what we have already done to GoDaddy. It will take a massive effort and coordination in addition to the fact that some of us will have to give up some of our entertainment.
I plead you to ask yourself this: is a move, a TV show, a little entertainment worth the detrimental effects of this bill passing? Ask yourself, is it worth the extra effort to go outside, to play a game with the family, to go on a date with my girlfriend or boyfriend instead of watching TV or browsing the internet?
We need to make it crystal, absolutely clear to these companies and organizations that censorship of the internet will not be tolerated in any form. We need to show them that as consumers, we are not a mass of mindless sheep. We have opinions and rights, and we will vote to keep them with our wallets.
If you agree that the cost is worth it, join me in a boycott of these companies.
