Home still?

Ever since hearing from my grandpa about how he built a still with spare B17 parts in europe during WWII, I have always wanted to make a home still. Has anyone done a small kitchen/backyard personal still? I have read a bunch of different methods, just wondering if anyone actually made anything worth it, or did it blow up / make you go blind?
