[TOMT] [Book] Young adult sci-fi novel involving giant "tripods"

This was a book I checked out from the school library in 2000-2003 or so. The only thing I remember about it was that there were giant three-legged creatures called tripods that wandered the earth.

I know that this sounds just like War of the Worlds, but that was above my reading level at the time so the book is either an adaptation of it, or someone got away with blatant plagiarism.
