How would I omit certain hyperlinks from the <a> tag if I have CSS formatting applied to it?

I'd like my a and a:hover to apply to all hyperlinks except images. When I mouseover an image that is a link, it's trying to do this background hi-light thing I have going for the text. Is there any way to tell the images to skip the formatting for <a>?

Thanks!
