Film and the TSA/Airports... HOW DO I DO THIS?!

So... I want to shoot film on a trip to Spain in a few weeks. I'll have my digi (a D90) with me and wanted to bring a film cam to collect some shots that way too. I've been a little confused as to what's currently up with the scanning process, the last time I flew was two years ago to Italy and I only shot digi for that trip.

I've heard countless horror stories about film and the newer airport scanners. Like lead bags not working anymore, these color shifted shots by Walead Beshty which had gotten screwed up by the airport scanner, film fogging. The TSA website is only marginally helpful saying that you could request a hand check of your film above ASA/ISO 800 or anything you want to push/pull. I've also heard that you shouldn't let anything you want to use go through any of the scanners period.

I guess what I'm asking for is personal experience flying with film and how to go about facilitating the speediest journey through the gates. And hopefully how to get them not to think my film canisters are anthrax/a bomb. Lol. Also, would it be prudent to buy/develop film over there (in Spain) and experiences?

TL;DR: Shooting film, Airport, How the fuck do I do this? What happens?
