Human behavior, mate guarding, sex, and religion
Greetings!
I'm not an anthropologist, but I took a basic anthropology course at one point that really stimulated my interest in a number of topics.
I'm a biologist with an interest in animal behavior (among other things) and the study of reproductive habits and mate guarding in animals seems to have a lot of parallels in human behavior, though we seem to develop elaborate explanations in regards to our behavior. (I mean this in terms of the general population's view of human behavior - not a scientific stance on the topic.)
I read something at one point about how circumcision possibly arose as a way to prevent men from siring children with the mates/partners/spouses of other men, and it made me wonder how many other sexual taboos, especially those tied to religious beliefs, serve a similar purpose.
Can anybody recommend any good books or papers on the topic? I like layman's books in order to get a good overview on the topic, but I would enjoy reading more scholarly works as well. I'm just interested in reading stuff for my own amusement and enlightenment.
Thanks heaps!
