Question about R4i Gold 3DS- Not working at all, please help

I just recently got an R4i Gold 3ds card for my 3ds, but my 3ds is version 3.0.0-6 and I cant even get the card to open on my DS. It just comes up with a load error regardless of what I do or what system I use. I've tried the R4 card on my original DS, but I couldn't get it to work on there either. So far I've never even got it to load right on any DS. How can I get it to work properly?

1 GB micro SD card in FAT32

1 R4i gold 3ds card

*Additionally: when I plug the card into any DS, the icon that comes up is that of what looks like a Digimon game. I think it may be concerning the firmware of the card itself and that I need to update the card but can't because I can't get it to load *
