How did this combination even happen?

Salty Licorice?!!?!

A few months ago I picked this up at our local EU import food store. It's an odd combination of flavors (it's salty licorice!) Most people I offer it to and try it, end up spitting it out, sometimes in a amusing fashion, hence the reason I still offer it to people. :)

Is this a popular candy in Holland ? And if so.... why? Any insight is appreciated. :)
