Can anyone explain to me why exactly I should vote for Ron Paul?
This is probably going to get downvoted to infinity, but this is the first year I am legally allowed to vote and I want to probe all your minds as to why I should vote for Ron Paul. I previously thought he was far too extreme to have my serious consideration, but a lot of Reddit seems to like him, so I would like to hear your honest opinions as to why he is the best candidate for President of the United States.
Let me start by listing my reasons for NOT wanting to vote for him (all from his official campaign website):
-
He is a pro-life candidate, and while he won't outright outlaw abortion, he will repeal Roe v. Wade, which I fear will cause many states to pass laws that do outlaw it. He will also remove significant funding for organizations that provide abortions to those who cannot afford them. This is not fair to women, most especially victims of sexual assault (I am male, by the way).
-
Repeal "ObamaCare." While I admit I do not know very much about the specifics of Obama's healthcare legislation, I do know it provides easier and less costly access to health insurance for low-income individuals and those who do not already have it. What is wrong with ObamaCare such that it needs to be repealed, and how will Ron Paul fix the problem that "insurance is expensive to get and difficult to maintain" (quoted from his site)?
-
He will eliminate all income and capital gains taxes, which will only make the rich richer and the poor poorer. Combined with the massive cuts in government spending, I fear for the effects on the already-suffering middle and lower classes. How can Reddit support Ron Paul and OWS at the same time?
-
Extreme stance on border security, denying amnesty, etc. Again, I fear for the effects on all those lower-class illegals currently in the US that are struggling to survive, even here. I feel there is a lack of humanity in this decision, and I don't think it's practical to just up and deport them all.
-
In addition to this, he wants to end birthright citizenship, a direct contradiction of the 14th Amendment.
-
Wants to end US involvement in global gun control and repeal the Assault Weapons Ban. This seems like I dangerous move. I don't see how assault weapons should be able to be owned freely. The Constitution gives us the right to bear arms, not the right to bear modern automatic assault weapons.
-
Repealing the EPA, removing restrictions on drilling, and no other plan to protect the environment or help combat global warming. In my opinion he is ignoring this critical issue, and is only taking steps that will worsen the environment in a time when we need to take correctionary measures most. Without the EPA, who will enforce restrictions on air, water, and other environmental pollution that obviously isn't able to be pinned as affecting a specific property owner?
With that being said, I do strongly agree with his ideas about personal liberty, I agree that our government needs to spend less (though maybe not as extreme as he is proposing - we still need social spending to support the suffering middle and lower classes), I love that he wants us to get out of foreign wars and to abolish the TSA.
However, I think he is too extreme on other issues and possibly too extreme on some of the issues I do agree with, and as such I think a more moderate candidate would be appropriate (i.e. Obama, even though he has rescinded on some of his campaign promises, I still believe he is the best candidate at this point in time). Can you convince me otherwise?
Thank you for your answers.
